Today’s Assignments

Why We Use Group Work

Mathematics is not something learned well by passive observation alone. Real understanding in Calculus II develops through solving problems, explaining ideas, asking questions, making mistakes, and revising your thinking. Group work gives you the chance to actively engage with the material while learning from the different perspectives and problem-solving strategies of your classmates.

Collaborative problem solving is also an important professional skill. In science, engineering, technology, finance, and many other fields, complex problems are rarely solved in isolation. Learning to communicate mathematical ideas clearly, work productively with others, and approach difficult problems as a team are valuable skills that extend far beyond this course.

Have fun, but stay focused! This is your opportunity to review previous material, fill in gaps in understanding, ask questions, and help ensure everyone in your group is keeping up. Keep the following expectations in mind (developed by students over many semesters):

  • Participate to the best of your abilities.
    • Everyone has off days—just do your best for today.
    • Take space/make space.
    • Support group members who are struggling.
  • Respect others.
    • Arrive on time.
    • Take learning seriously. You chose to be here.
    • Be inclusive, positive, supportive, and kind.
    • Encourage one another. People already have enough judges in their lives; they could probably use a cheerleader instead.
  • Communicate productively.
    • Remember, we critique ideas, not people.
    • Practice active listening.
    • Be open to respectful disagreement. But remember, there is often more than one valid way to solve a problem.
    • Ask questions freely.
    • Explain your reasoning, discuss ideas carefully, and make sure everyone understands before moving on.
  • Avoid distractions.
    • Stay focused on assigned tasks.
    • Avoid distracting your group or nearby groups.
Follow-up Task

Please email me your suggestions, we’ll vote to adopt norms during the groupwork next week with any revisions/additions discussed first.
